Gaius Rapide 3 EDV to be withdrawn from use at Australia Post

Recently, CWU members have spoken up about a number of concerns with the comfort, safety and operational performance of the Gaius Rapide 3 electric delivery vehicle.

Your feedback has been consistent and clear, and as your Union, we made sure those concerns were landing in front of the decision makers to be treated with the seriousness they deserve.

In response to this feedback, the CWU and Australia Post reached agreement for the engagement of an external ergonomist to review the vehicle and engage with riders to ensure an independent and objective assessment of the issues raised by members occurred.

Following the initial findings of that review, the feedback you provided directly, and further consultation with Australia Post, the business has agreed to pause the national Rapide 3 pilot and suspend driver training while further assessment takes place. This is a positive step toward ensuring that any vehicle introduced into Australia Post’s delivery fleet must meet the safety requirements standards our members, and the public, expect and deserve.

Vehicle Withdrawal and Next Steps

All Gaius Rapide 3 vehicles will be withdrawn from use over the next few days, with replacement vehicles to arrive at impacted facilities shortly to ensure there is no disruption to your ability to safely perform your duties.

Your Union will continue engaging with Australia Post throughout an upcoming review process to ensure our members’ safety, comfort, and operational practicality remain the top priority in any further considerations.

No vehicle will be endorsed for further rollout unless it meets these standards.

Thank You

We want to thank all members who raised concerns, took part in the trial, and contributed to the recent ergonomist’s assessment. Your willingness to speak up has directly influenced this outcome and helped ensure your issues were taken seriously.

CWU members’ voices continue to shape safer and fairer workplaces and for those who are not yet members – there’s never been a better time to join.

We will keep members informed as this important issue evolves. In the meantime, if you require any further information, please contact your State Branch Official for assistance.
