Extreme rain and flooding disrupts mail services in Sydney and NSW

Record breaking rain and cyclone-strength winds pounded Sydney, The Hunter (Newcastle area) and Central Coast for over 3 days disrupting mail services. Posties in flooded areas like Seven Hills Delivery Facility were directed not to perform deliveries due to serious OHS concerns due to flooding.

Posties, van and transport drivers on the Central Coast were call back to the depot on Tuesday and sent home due to cyclone like conditions.

National Office Senior Industrial Officer, Michael Etue, said the above decisions by Post were good but they should have gone further. Torrential rain, low visibility and possible damage to letters and parcels should have seen the majority of mail services cancelled or suspended on the worst days in Sydney and other affected areas.

Delivery and Transport will still be affected with trees down, flooding and numerous hazards on the roads and sidewalks due to the storms. Members are advised to report all serious hazards to local management.
