Union calls for priority vaccination of essential postal and telecommunications workers

The union representing the nation's postal and telecommunications workers, the CEPU, have written to Health Minister Greg Hunt asking for priority access to vaccines for communications workers in Sydney including posties, postal workers and communication field technicians

CEPU National Secretary Greg Rayner said, “postal and telecommunications workers have played a vital role in keeping people connected and the economy moving during the covid pandemic and we need to protect them against the risk from this outbreak of the Delta variant.

“These workers travel in and out of ‘red zones’ daily and have a high degree of interaction with the community – in our post offices, in our homes and in our businesses, and should be immediately eligible for vaccination, alongside other priority workers such as health and quarantine workers and aged care workers.

“There would be few categories of workers that are required to have such diverse public interaction in the course of their duties in comparison to our members.

“The union has recently written to Health Minister Greg Hunt asking him not to forget the risk from covid to our postal and telecommunications workers – we are yet to receive an acknowledgement, let alone a response.

“They are placing themselves, their families and the most vulnerable people in the communities they live in and work in at risk in order to ensure the delivery of essential goods and medicines to the public, and to keep critical telecommunications and broadband infrastructure online.

“Our members continue to keep vital human connection possible during this pandemic and deserve to be protected.”
