MEDIA RELEASE: Labor’s bill to keep NBN public is ‘a win-win for millions of customers and the NBN workforce’

The Union representing NBN workers, the Communication Workers Union (CWU), is welcoming Labor’s announcement that the Federal Government will introduce legislation that will keep NBN Co in public hands.

“This is a welcomed announcement, and the right thing to ensure our national broadband infrastructure remains universally accessible and affordable, for all Australians,” says Shane Murphy, CWU National President.

“More than 8.5 million homes and businesses rely on the NBN to stay connected, and if passed, this bill will ensure that Australians will not be threatened with massive price hikes and service quality deterioration that would inevitably occur should this vital piece of our nation’s public infrastructure be sold to the highest bidder.

“We are pleased to see the Government’s commitment to keep Australia’s connectivity in public hands, especially during the cost-of-living crisis that continues to deeply impact millions across the country.

“NBN workers and their families will also breathe a sigh of relief knowing their jobs won’t be on the chopping block because of privatisation.

“This is a demonstration of commitment from Labor that they want to keep investing in the nation’s broadband backbone – and are backing its workforce.

“Not only does this provide consistency for Australians, no matter where they live, but also for the NBN workforce that does the hard work to keep our communities connected.

“It’s a win-win that ensures everyone will continue to stay connected to our nation’s ‘digital backbone’.

“We look forward to working with Government to continue improving this valuable service to the 12.4 million households, businesses and other premises that rely on NBN.

“We want to see this law passed when it comes time to vote on the future of the NBN, and Australia’s universally available connectivity,” says Murphy.
