Local posties on the Gold Coast are urging dog owners to properly secure their pets, following a series of dog attacks on postal workers across the coast.
The call comes after a particularly serious incident that has left a local postie hospitalised and resulted in a dog being involuntarily euthanised.
Shane Murphy, National Secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) - the posties’ Union – said dog attacks remain one of the most significant safety risks faced by postal workers and keeping dogs properly secured is necessary for the safety of posties and dog owners’ beloved pets.
“Our members go to work every day to provide an essential service to the community and they deserve to go home safely to their families,” Mr Murphy said.
“While dog attacks have always been a concern, we’re seeing an increase in the prevalence of these incidents on the Gold Coast and that is putting our members and the public at risk.
“Our members have been chased, bitten, knocked to the ground and seriously injured while out delivering letters and parcels.
“The recent attack that left our member hospitalised was traumatic for everyone involved. It also resulted in a dog being euthanised, which is a heartbreaking outcome that could have been prevented.
Mr Murphy said ensuring dogs are secured is the simplest way Gold Coasters can help protect their local posties and their beloved family pets.
“This isn’t about blaming dog owners. It’s about awareness and prevention.
“Something as simple as ensuring your dog is properly restrained can prevent serious injuries to our local posties and can ultimately save a dog’s life.
“Dog attacks are preventable, so we’re asking this wonderful community to do their part for so that our local Gold Coast posties, our neighbours and our pets can all stay safe,” says Mr Murphy.
