MEDIA RELEASE - Government must reject secret Australia Post privatisation report

The Union representing Australia’s postal workers has called for the Federal Government to rule out the break up and privatisation of key parts of Australia Post following explosive testimony from former CEO Christine Holgate at a Senate Inquiry hearing yesterday.

Ms Holgate tabled extracts from a to-date secret Boston Consulting Group report that outlines four options for slashing services, cutting jobs and selling off parts of Australia Post.

CEPU Communications Union National President Shane Murphy said, “what is particularly concerning is key elements of the Boston Consulting Group plan were already embedded in measures that Australia Post had introduced ‘temporarily’ under cover of Covid last year and are now seeking to extend.

“According to the extracts from the Boston Consulting Group report tabled at the inquiry, the plan would lead to the loss of up to 8,000 full-time jobs.

“There is no way Australia Post can cut 8,000 jobs and continue to maintain or improve the current level of postal services as we emerge from the Covid crisis.

“Workers across Australia are now anxious and unclear about where, how and when potential job cuts will be introduced and communities are left in the dark about whether their postal services will continue, the frequency of deliveries and what the future will bring.

“As we recover from Covid, Australia Post should be an employer of choice, with secure jobs and high levels of community service, not cutting and running on workers and the community during tough times. The Federal Government should reject the Boston Consulting Group plan outright” he said.
