The ballot of eligible employees on the proposed NBN Enterprise Agreement has now concluded, and with a 68.9% participation rate, the Agreement has been narrowly approved, with 51.3% voting ‘yes'.
National President and Central Branch Secretary Shane Murphy said that although the outcome reflected a democratic choice, it highlighted a need for continued efforts to improve working conditions at NBN:
“While this agreement has been accepted, the low participation rate and the extremely narrow margin of approval demonstrates a desire by the majority of the workforce to secure better terms in future negotiations,” said Shane.
“Although the ramifications mean a real-terms minority carried this over the line, the outcome is a democratic one and we have more work to do to ensure we’re in a stronger position at the bargaining table during the next round of talks.
“Stronger Union membership and active participation from members on the ground are key to not only protecting wages and conditions, but improving them.
“More united and engaged members strengthens our position at the bargaining table, giving us a greater voice in shaping our future at NBN Co.
“I am urging existing members at NBN to encourage their colleagues to join the Union and get involved—our power comes from our unity.
“Now is the time to stand together and to continue building our collective strength to achieve better outcomes.
“United, we bargain – divided, we beg.”
